NEW DELHI:
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation reached a major milestone in its
Phase IV construction work as it cast its first pier on the Janakpuri West-RK Ashram Marg corridor on Saturday night.
The pillar was cast on the elevated stretch between Keshopur and Mukarba Chowk.
DMRC was able to achieve this major construction milestone despite severe shortage of manpower and other logistical challenges because of the ongoing pandemic, Anuj Dayal, executive director (corporate communications), said.
Though the average height of metro pillars on the corridor would be 10 metres, the height of the pillar at Madhuban Chowk is expected to be 20 metres as it will cross the Red Line (Rithala-Shaheed Sthal) and 25 metres at Haiderpur Badli Mor where the Phase IV corridor will cross Yellow Line (Samaypur Badli-HUDA City Centre).
At Haiderpur Badli Mor, the rail level (28 metres) is going to be the highest in the history of Delhi Metro. Presently, the highest point is at Dhaula Kuan, where the Pink Line (Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar) viaduct passes at a height of 23.6 metres. The approximate distance between each pillar is expected to be about 28 metres.
“Piers are vertical load-bearing structures that act as intermediate support for adjacent ends of two spans. They form the vertical support structures on which the elevated metro viaducts stand,” Dayal explained. “Metro piers today dot innumerable road medians through which the elevated corridors run,” he added.
