NEW DELHI: The members of Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNU) assembled in front of the Delhi Police headquarters on Monday protesting against the inaction regarding the violence by masked miscreants on the campus on January 5.
“This inaction serves to only reinforce suspicions about the reasons behind the failure of police on that fateful day to prevent the mob violence or apprehend any of the culprits,” they stated in a memorandum addressed to police commissioner Amulya Patnaik.

During its January 10 press conference on the progress of the investigation, Delhi Police emphasised almost exclusively on previous incidents while remaining silent about the mob violence, they alleged. “No further progress has been reported,” the memorandum added. According to JNUTA, none of the 60-odd complaints filed on the mob violence, including those submitted by teachers, has been converted into an FIR. “All the evidence, therefore, indicates that the Special Investigation Team has put the investigation in cold storage,” JNUTA alleged, adding that, “it appears to be a part of a larger pattern where police are more proactive in restraining the exercise of democratic rights in the name of maintaining law and order than it is in protecting these rights”.
A delegation met special CP (intelligence) Praveer Ranjan. A spokesperson said they had briefed the delegation about the status of the probe. “Special CP (intelligence) Ranjan has also assured them of all cooperation ,” he added.
Several students and teachers were injured in the attack, during which hostel properties were also damaged.
