New normal for Delhi assembly
NEW DELHI: Soon after the one-day monsoon session of assembly began on Monday, AAP's Rithala MLA, Mohinder Goel, submitted his resignation to speaker Ram Niwas Goel over alleged misbehaviour of a police officer and demanded his suspension.
He also wanted to leave the proceedings, saying he can't remain a member of the assembly till the officer is punished. The speaker, however, did not accept the resignation and persuaded the MLA not to leave the House.
Assuring strict action, he said the Delhi Police commissioner would be summoned during the next session.
Leader of Opposition Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and other BJP MLAs supported Goel's demand, while AAP's Raghav Chadha said the officer should be summoned before a committee of the assembly.
As the Covid-hit session did not have any question hour, legislators raised important matters under Rule 280. Malviya Nagar MLA Somnath Bharti demanded that consumers who had received cumulative electricity bills during the Covid lockdown should get EMI options for payment. The AAP MLA from Mustafabad, Haji Yunus, alleged police were making arbitrary arrests of innocent people in the name of alleged involvement in riots.
BJP's Anil Bajpai, representing Gandhi Nagar, accused Delhi government of ignoring the constituencies under the party MLAs during installation of CCTV cameras. He said cameras sanctioned under phase I had not been installed in Gandhi Nagar and no work had started under phase II.
PWD minister Satyendar Jain brushed aside the allegations, saying the installation was affected due to the pandemic. "The installation under phase II will start after the first phase is over," he said.
Referring to over 250 acres of agricultural land getting submerged in waste water on the Delhi-Gurugram border, the AAP MLA from Matiala, Gulab Singh, sought a meeting between the governments of Haryana and Delhi.
