IIT Ropar extends mid-semester break; asks students to vacate hostels amid Corona threat

Around 2100 students including 574 PhD students, 1046 Undergraduates and 348 students in Master in Science and M.Tech are persuing studies in IIT Ropar which is 100 residential institute accomodating students in hostels.

PATIALA: With the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases in the country, IIT Ropar has also taken measures to reduce transmission risk by extending the mid-semester break by suspending the classes till March 31 and officially announcing suspension of public gatherings, conferences, workshops and seminars as a precautionary measure.
As a precautionary measure in the larger interest of the Institute community, the students including undergraduate, Postgraduate and Research Scholars have been asked to vacate the campus no later than midnight of Wednesday (March 18) however the students from high-risk areas such as Kerala, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi will be allowed to stay in the campus with special permission.

Around 2100 students including 574 PhD students, 1046 Undergraduates and 348 students in Master in Science and M.Tech are persuing studies in IIT Ropar which is 100 residential institute accomodating students in hostels. Earlier the classes were suspended till March 22 however the authorities of IIT Ropar now decided to extend till March 31.
Already IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur already announced their students and staff to vacate the institute besides suspending the classes while IIT Hyderabad had instructed its staff members to work from home till March 29.
All Faculty, Staff and Students and residents of the Institute, who are coming from foreign countries, have to quarantine for 14 days in the specially designated Quarantine facility at the Institute and the information in this regard shall be furnished to the Office of International Relations for onward submission to local authorities in Rupnagar (Ropar) district.
The Faculty or officers and staff and their family who have visited or returned from high-risk states like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala after March 2 is required to get screened at the Medical Centre. These staff members are suggested to work from home up to 14 days from their day of arrival.
Prof. Sarit K Das, Director, IIT Ropar said, "In view of the advisories issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the World Health Organization and Department of Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, to take preventive measures since the eruption of the COVID-19, we have decided to extend the mid-sem break till March 31. The decision has been taken to preclude any risks to students and their extended families and friends as well as to the faculty and employees of the Institute."
