AGRA: Aligarh police have booked JNU student Sharjeel Imam under sedition charges for the alleged anti-national statement he made while addressing students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) who were protesting against CAA in the campus on January 16.
Imam, currently a PhD student in JNU, has been booked under Section 124 A (sedition), 153 A (provocation with intent to cause riots), 153 B (whoever by words either spoken or written or by signs makes or publishes any imputation, assertions prejudicial to national-integration or may cause disharmony) and 505 (2) of IPC at Civil Lines police station.

DIG, Akash Kulhary, said that during investigation it was found that the purported video, in which the suspect made some anti-national statements, was shot in AMU campus when Imam was addressing the protesting students. He said that Imam will be arrested soon.
AMU spokesperson Shafey Kidwai said that the university administration was not aware of Imam’s speech. He said no permission was taken by them. “We condemn whatever he said in the purported video,” said Kidwai, adding that the university administration will support the district administration whatever action they take in this matter. He, however, confirmed that Imam visited the university campus.
