AHMEDABAD: Twenty-nine-year-old Avinash Talreja, a city based chartered accountant, married Sana Kumari in Sukkur city of Pakistan’s Sindh province on February 24. He wanted to return to India with his wife, but she insisted they stay at her house for a few more days. Then the lockdown was put in place and Talreja was stranded in Pakistan for over six months.
Talreja and his mother, Nankhibai Talreja, were among the 40 stranded Gujaratis who returned to India from Pakistan on Wednesday through the Wagah border.
All of them were stranded in the neighbouring country because of the lockdown. A total of 400 Indians returned from Pakistan through the Wagah border on Wednesday.
“It feels great to be back in our country. My wife though could not come as her visa expired on July 8,” said Talreja, who is scheduled to arrive in Ahmedabad from Delhi on Thursday night.
Vinod Thakor (23), who runs a fabrication unit at Nana Chiloda, is also a relieved man. He had been to Hyderabad city in Pakistan with his wife, son and brother to attend a cousin’s weddding. “We reached Pakistan on March 5 and planned to return after 20 days, but then the lockdown came into force,” says Thakor, adding that he was worried about his business and home here.
The Bharatiya Sindhu Samaj, which coordinated the return of those stranded, sought the intervention of the state government to ensure that none of those who returned to Gujarat needed to go through institutional quarantine. “Those who were returning were very excited to be back. Thankfully, the government permitted them to go home after conducting Covid-19 tests,” said Anil Khatri, Ahmedabad president of Bharatiya Sindhu Samaj.
