AHMEDABAD: A city sessions court in Ahmedabad on Monday granted bail to the Congress party leader and former convener of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), Hardik Patel, in connection with an FIR lodged against him by Ramol police in 2017.
Patel was arrested on March 20 from Tankara town in Saurashtra, where he had gone to attend a court proceeding. The next day, a metropolitan court denied him bail.
He was sent to judicial custody in Ramol case.
Patel is facing a case of rioting in Ramol police station after he along with 56 others were booked for an alleged attack on the house of Vastral area councilor, Paresh Patel. He had obtained anticipatory bail in this case on condition that he cannot enter the jurisdiction area of Ramol police during the pendency of the case. He skipped the court date on February 5, and the metropolitan court issued arrest warrant against him.
Patel’s advocate Rafik Lokhandwala said that he avoided the court hearing fearing that he would be arrested in a 2015 FIR registered with Vastrapur police for the violence that took place at the GMDC ground on August 25, 2015 after Patel addressed a mammoth rally of Patidars to push their case for reservation in government jobs for the community.
While evading arrest in the FIR lodged at the Vastapur police station, Patel skipped hearing in sedition case also in the city sessions court, which issued an arrest warrant against him on February 7. Patel has been granted an interim protection against this warrant by the Supreme Court.
