AHMEDABAD: A posse of police personnel is keeping a tight vigil at this well in Vadtal village in Nadiad taluka in Kheda district. This is because the well is filled with liquor after hundreds of bottles dumped in it and ‘thirsty people’ may take advantage in dry Gujarat.
On September 6, Chaklasi police of Kheda district had raided a house in Vadtal village after getting an input that nearly 400 liquor bottles were concealed there.
As the cops raided, two bootleggers identified as Mahendra Parmar of Vadtal and Manoj Bishnoi of Rajasthan dumped a huge container containing liquor bottles in a well in the house.
Police caught them and recovered 72 bottles of whiskey and 19 beer cans, together worth Rs 35,500. Later cops tried to recover other bottles from the well but as it was very deep, they called up fire brigade personnel to dive into the well and fish out the liquor bottle. “We have managed to recover 150 intact bottles from the well but rest of the bottles got broken in the well and liquor blended into the water,” said inspector Jigar Patel of Chaklasi police.
“Though we have taken samples from the well to be produced before the prosecution, it has also become necessary to protect the well from the people who may temper with the evidence and take water from the well filled with liquor. So, we had to deploy eight police personnel to protect the well,” added Patel.
He said that the entire water has been extracted till Saturday and the police deployment was there for around a fortnight from September 6.
Earlier, the police had deployed eight fire brigade personnel who also found it difficult to enter the well. “The search team had to get oxygen cylinders to dive into the well as they might have gone unconscious during the operation,” said a police officer.
