AHMEDABAD: The high profile visit of US President Donald Trump had the cattle nuisance department running from pillar to post to impound stray cattle and dogs. The exercise will not mean much the long run, as these impounded animals will be back on the roads.
In the last week, AMC workers caught 48 cows and buffaloes and 55 dogs from the area around Motera and the airport.
Officials said that according to policy, the dogs will be sterilized and released from wherever they were caught.
“We have a policy that the owner has to pay a fine and to get their cattle back and this will be done,” said deputy municipal commissioner Mukesh Gadhvi.
Officials at the zone-level said that the AMC has in many cases lodged police complaints against such cattle owners, but in this case no complaints have been registered. The officer said that it was also noticed that not all dogs had been caught but most of the cattle on the roads were caught.
The Gujarat high court had last May directed that “the concerned authorities enforce appropriate laws in connection with stray animals. Appropriate preventive as well as curative measures will be taken by the concerned authorities to prevent this problem more effectively during the monsoon period. It is also directed that appropriate authorities shall take appropriate action against the owners or persons leaving their cattle to stray on the roads so that such persons are not tempted to repeat the same again.”
The officer said that it has been noted in many cases that the cattle impounded are caught again and again and in each time the owner gets them released after paying the fine.
