BENGALURU: Aditya Rao, the Udupi resident arrested for planting an explosive in Mangaluru airport this Monday, changed 19 jobs in 14 years. Rao wore several hats with equal felicity: sales executive, design and software engineer, production engineer, security guard, cook, bartender and hotel cashier.
And all this in the midst of serving a one-year prison term for making hoax bomb calls to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), Bengaluru.
Rao's longest stint (18 months ) was with a private firm in Peenya, Bengaluru. "I consume alcohol and smoke cigarette and ganja," Rao had confessed.
According to Rao's confession statement in the KIA case accessed by TOI, after graduating as mechanical engineer and earning a masters in business administration in Mysuru in 2006, Rao started working as a sales executive with a multinational bank with its office on MG Road. After 13 months in his first job, Rao joined as a sales manager with another multinational bank in May 2007. The second bank promoted him as senior sales manager immediately. He later joined another multinational bank on MG Road.
Barely five months into his third job, Rao felt 'bored' and decided to change his field. He switched from the banking to small-scale industries. In February 2008, Rao joined a Peenya industry as a design and software engineer.
Everything went smooth for about 13 months, after which Rao decided to join another Peenya industry as a production engineer in March 2009. Rao changed his mind in March 2010 and returned to the design and software engineer job with the earlier Peenya employer. After about 18 months, he resigned and returned to Udupi.
"I was tired of sitting inside AC rooms. My health was getting affected. There was no thrill in the job," Rao told police. Between September 2011 and February 2012 Rao lived with his parents, during which he worked in three different hotels as a part-time cashier. In March 2013, Rao joined a college in Ujire as a security guard. According to Rao, he showed only his PU markscard to land the job.

He worked as a security guard in three more colleges between 2013 and 2016. In September 2016, he joined a mutt in Udupi as a cook and lived there till July 2017.
In August 2017, Rao became a 'captain' at a bar and restaurant in Manipal. In February 2018, he walked into another bar and restaurant in Mangaluru and became the 'chief bartender'. Resigning his bar and restaurant job in June 2018, he returned to Bengaluru and became a sales executive with a private life insurance firm.
For reasons unknown, Rao quit this job in July 2018 and applied for the post of security guard at KIA in August. Rao's application was rejected, following which he made four hoax calls to the airport. After serving one year jail term for the hoax calls, he worked in two different hotels before planting an explosive in Mangaluru airport.
