Cartoonist arrested in TN for obscene representation of VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan
VILLUPURAM: A 30-year-old cartoonist working for a private animation company in Puducherry was arrested in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu on Monday for obscene representation of VCK leader and Chidambaram MP Thol Thirumavalavan.
The arrested cartoonist has been identified as S Surendra Kumar alias Varma, 30, of T Kumaramangalam village near Tiruvennainallur in Villupuram district.
Villupuram superintendent of police S Jayakumar said, “Kumar’s hobby was to design political cartoons.
He also used to share his works on his social media pages.”
On Saturday, he posted a cartoon on his Twitter page, defaming Thirumavalavan.
Based on a complaint lodged by A M Elavarasu, 40, VCK party’s Tiruvennainallur union secretary, Kumar was booked under sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot ) 504 (whoever intentionally insults, and thereby gives provocation to any person, intending or knowing it to be likely that such provocation will cause him to break the public peace ) and 505 (whoever makes, publishes or circulates any statement, rumour or report ) of the IPC and Section 67 (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of Information Technology Act .
Further investigations were on.
Elavarsu insisted that Kumar, who belonged to a dominant vanniyar community, should be booked under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
