CHENNAI: PMK founder S Ramadoss on Sunday asked the Centre to ensure the safety of Sri Lankan Tamils and protection of their basic rights. His appeal comes in the wake of Sri Lankan premier Mahinda Rajapaksa led political party winning a thumping majority in the Sri Lankan elections.
With Mahinda Rajapaksa’s party winning a nearly two-third majority, it would enable the ruling alliance to introduce changes in the constitution, especially the 13th amendment introduced based on the Indo – Sri Lanka accord in 1987.

The 13th amendment ensured basic civil rights to Tamils living in the north and eastern regions, besides providing certain powers to the states in the Island nation.
With Mahinda Rajapaksa returning to power and his brother Gothabaya Rajapaksa being the president of Sri Lanka, there is a perceived fear among the Tamils in the island nation. Indian government should ensure the safety of the remaining Tamils and also ensure their basic rights, Ramadoss said.
