CHENNAI: The Madras high court on Thursday granted 30 days parole to Robert Payas, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
A division bench of Justices M M Sundresh and R M T Teekaa Raman granted the relief while allowing a plea moved by Payas seeking ordinary leave for his son's marriage. Payas, who will be out of jail between November 25 and December 24, had undertaken to stay in the jurisdiction of the Neelankarai police station.
The petitioner said he had been in prison since August 16, 1991. "During such period, I had not utilised the emergency leave or ordinary leave available to prisoners under the Tamil Nadu Suspension of Sentence Rules," he said. He submitted a representation on August 7 to the director general of prisons seeking parole for 30 days so he could make arrangements for his son Tamilko's marriage. As there was no progress on the request even after expiry of 40 days, he moved the high court.
