CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu governor Banwarilal Purohit has tested positive for Covid-19.
“He is asymptomatic and clinically stable,” said an official bulletin from a private city hospital.
Purohit was taken to a private hospital in Chennai on Sunday morning. The hospital visit comes against the backdrop of 87 employees of Raj Bhavan testing positive in less than ten days.
“He underwent further tests and assessment at the hospital.
As the infection is mild, he has been advised home isolation and will be monitored by the medical team of the hospital,” the bulletin added.
Purohit is 80. He assumed office in October 2017.
On July 29, a Raj Bhavan press release said the governor went into self-isolation after three more staff members tested positive for Covid-19. “Yesterday (Tuesday), the Raj Bhavan medical officer carried out regular health check-up of the governor and found him fit and healthy,” it said.
Purohit chose to be in seven-day self-isolation as advised by his doctor.
During previous tests on 147 Raj Bhavan staff, 84 persons, including security personnel and fire staff were found positive. All of them were working outside Raj Bhavan like the main gate and not in the main building. As a precautionary measure, however, the entire area of Raj Bhavan, including offices, was fumigated by the civic body.
As a precautionary measure, Raj Bhavan tours for the tourists had already been cancelled till August 31.
