CHENNAI: Police on Sunday arrested two men from Bihar for cheating people by giving them fake currency notes in return for money of lesser denomination.
The duo, identified as Chottilal Paswan, 30, and Ram Babu Mahanto, 30, are involved in at least five cheating cases in the city. They targeted only migrant workers from Bihar or Rajasthan.
Explaining their modus operandi, a police officer said the two spoke to migrant workers in Hindi or in Bhojpuri and befriended them.
They used to ask their targets if they had notes of smaller denomination in exchange for Rs 2,000 or 500, but gave them fake currency with a few genuine notes of 500 or 2,000 on top.
They used to make an excuse to explain the need for cash in smaller denominations such as 100 or 200 notes. They were also involved in three cheating cases at Kothavalchavadi and two in Esplanade.
