COIMBATORE: A male elephant, which had suffered an injury during a fight with another tusker around 10 days ago, died in Nellimalai reserve
forest in Coimbatore forest division in the early hours of Friday.
A few days ago, frontline staff of the Mettupalayam forest range found the ailing tusker, aged between 9 and 11 years. They could not approach the animal as there was a herd of elephants in the area.
Sugumar, veterinary officer of Coimbatore forest division, started to treat the tusker on Thursday, and 32 bottles of glucose was administered to the elephant.
The veterinarian said the elephant had suffered an injury on its palate while fighting with another male elephant.
The elephant was not able to take food and water. It was starving. The elephant died without responding to treatment.
A postmortem would be performed on the carcass.
