Secunderabad: The
legal metrology department on Thursday cracked the whip on
Big Spice Restaurant and Bar in
Habsiguda for charging more than the maximum retail price (MRP) following a complaint filed by a consumer. On October 10, the complainant – Praveen Kumar Manthoju – had visited the restaurant and was shocked to find out that they had charged Rs 35 for a water bottle with
MRP of Rs 20, Rs 40 for a 300ml cold drink with MRP of Rs 25 and Rs 30 for a 300ml soda worth Rs 12.
Manthoju lodged a complaint with Medchal legal metrology department which inspected the restaurant and found gross violations on its part. “During course of inspections, 60 ml and 30 ml peg measures were verified and found to be short by 5 ml and (restaurant) also did not exhibit verification certificate in the premises,” read the action report issued by legal metrology department. The department registered a case for contravention of section 30 and section 8/25 of Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
As per legal metrology (packaged commodities) rules 2011, no retail dealer, manufacturer, packer, importer and wholesale dealer shall sell a product in packed form at price exceeding MRP. It is also a violation of Consumer Goods Act, 2006. “Until people come forward and complaint, this will not stop,” said Sai Teja, member of Forum Against Corruption.
