Telangana may hike retirement age of government staff from April 1

The state government is likely to implement chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s promise of increasing the retirement age of government employees from April 1. Though the chief minister made the promise to increase the retirement age from 58 to 61 years during his campaign in the 2018 Assembly elections, it has not been implemented even 14-months after TRS government coming into office for second term.

HYDERABAD: The state government is likely to implement chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s promise of increasing the retirement age of government employees from April 1. Though the chief minister made the promise to increase the retirement age from 58 to 61 years during his campaign in the 2018 Assembly elections, it has not been implemented even 14-months after TRS government coming into office for second term.
KCR will also take a final call on restricting the enhancement of superannuation age to 60 years — on a par with central government employees — or increase it to 61 years, after the Pay Revision Commission submits report.

Many government employees have been eagerly waiting for KCR to announce the date of implementation of the new retirement age. Over 26,000 employees are scheduled to retire in the next three years, starting from 2020.
The hopes of government employees had renewed when KCR had increased the retirement age of TSRTC employees from 58 to 60 years in December 2019, after their strike was called off. However, there was no response from the government on enhancing government employees’ superannuation age.
As per official estimates, the state government will save Rs 3,500 crore per annum by increasing the retirement age, as it would not have to pay gratuity and other retirement benefits. In three years, it would save over Rs 10,000 crore.

Telangana non-gazetted officers association president K Ravinder Reddy told TOI that already over 8,000 employees have retired in the last one year since KCR’s promise, and those scheduled to retire soon are eagerly waiting for him to fulfil his promise.
“It would be a win-win situation for the government as well as employees. The government would save a lot of money, as it would not have to pay retirement benefits and gratuity. Also, the administration’s and government’s work would continue unhindered as experienced hands would work for another three years,” Reddy said.
However, Telangana State Students and Unemployed JAC chairman Koturi Manavatha Roy said that the government should first issue a notification for filling up over 2 lakh vacancies in the government sector and then think of enhancing the retirement age. “The unemployed youth will launch a state-wide agitation if superannuation age is enhanced without issuing notification for filling up vacancies,” Roy said.
