KOTTAYAM: After an initial furore over changing the name of popular junction 'China Mukku' (China Junction) in Konni town, a section of grama panchayat committee has turned against renaming the junction.
The Congress-dominated panchayat committee has failed to take a unanimous stand on the name change. The UDF has 13 members and the LDF has five in the 18-member panchayat committee.
Panchayat president Rejani M has approached Congress regional leadership to sort out the issue. It was vice-president of the panchayat committee Praveen Plavilayil who served a notice on the panchayat president for moving a resolution on the name change after the Galwan Valley clash. Now parliamentary party of the Congress members in the committee will meet next week to take a decision. "We haven't taken any decision regarding the name change. However, we realised that there will be a lot of practical difficulties for the public if the name is changed. They will have to change their address in Aadhaar, ration cards and other documents," the panchayat president said. "Moreover, the panchayat committee does not have the right to change the name of a place," she added.
Deenamma Roy, a Congress member in the committee, said the vice-president had given the letter without discussing with others.
