MUMBAI: It was yet another uncomfortable day for Mumbaikars on Tuesday, as day temperatures continued to stay on the higher side.
The maximum temperatures recorded on Tuesday by the IMD Santacruz observatory was 36.5 C, 5.6 above normal.
This was slightly lower than maximum temperatures recorded on Monday, of 38.1 C. Weathermen said that such spikes in temperatures are generally observed during a transition period from one season to another, for instance, currently from winter to summer.
Besides, a similar trend is likely to continue for the next 24 hours, IMD has forecast.
On Tuesday, maximum temperatures recorded by the IMD Colaba observatory was 35.6 C, 5.8 above normal. The minimum temperatures recorded were also on the higher side, as IMD Colaba recorded 22.2 C, and IMD Santacruz recorded 22.4 C.
K S Hosalikar, deputy director-general (western region), IMD, said it was the dry easterly winds over the state, which led to the rise in temperatures.
Meanwhile, relative humidity recorded on Tuesday evening by IMD Colaba and Santacruz observatories was 66% and 39% respectively.
The city's air remained in the 'poor' category on Tuesday. On Tuesday morning, Mumbai saw an air quality index (AQI) of 263, which was marginally better than the previous day's 281. The air quality is expected to dip to 277 on Wednesday, and researchers do not expect it to improve till the wind picks up speed or changes direction.
