Jaanu Box-Office: Despite rave reviews, Samantha and Sharwanand starrer is off to a slow start

Jaanu, the Telugu remake of Kollywood’s cult classic ‘96’, has hit the worldwide theaters on Friday. Starring Samantha Akkineni and Sharwanand in the shoes of Trisha and Vijay Sethupathi, the film opened to rave reviews from critics’ who hailed it as an earnest remake with impeccable performances from the lead actors. Though there is a positive response from the audience in the Telugu states, the box-office figures of Jaanu on the first day are somewhat less than expected.
According to the stats in AndhraBoxOffice, the romantic-drama accumulated a total gross of Rs 3.6 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Considering the solid pre-release hype and the presence of two established actors, the number seems to be quite a bit low. In overseas too, the film is off to a slow start.
However, with positive responses all over, the collections of Jaanu are expected to go big during the weekend. The worldwide theatricals are valued at Rs 21 crore and the film really needs to pull up to reach the break-even mark.
Jaanu is helmed by the original director Prem Kumar and bankrolled by prominent producer Dil Raju. The songs and the video promos have already struck the right chord with the viewers’ owing to the crackling chemistry between Sam and Sharwa.
