The entire world is celebrating Friendship Day on Sunday (August 2) and as we’re struck amid these hard times of COVID-19, celebrations might be strictly limited to exchanging pleasantries through social media or phone. First proposed at Paraguay in 1958, Friendship Day celebrates the non-blood relationship between humans.
Over the years, Telugu cinema has been glorifying relationships and friendship is one of them. While films like Sneham Kosam, Prema Desam, Dalapathi, Happy Days, Nee Sneham and Arya 2 explore friendship from different angles and circumstances, several songs have played a key role in highlighting and cherishing the long-lasting bond. It’s been over 24 years since the release of Prema Desam, the Telugu dubbed version of Tamil film Kadhal Desam and still, ‘Mustafa Mustafa’ occupies a place of pride as the most iconic ‘friendship song’ of our times. Whether it is a reunion or farewell party in college, no gathering between friends is complete without this rack playing at some point. Composed and crooned by Oscar-winning musician AR Rahman, the number created a rage in theaters at the time of release. Starring Vineeth, Abbas and Tabu in leading roles, ‘Prema Desam’ directed by Kathir revolves around two friends who fall in love with the same girl.


Sung by Devi Sri Prasad, the song is composed for Vunnadhi Okate Zindagi starring Ram Pothineni, Sree Vishnu and Anupama Parameswaran in lead roles. ‘Trendu Maarina’ reflects the inseparable bond between Abhi and Vasu as they have been friends since childhood. However, things start to get complicated when they fall for the same girl and eventually, Abhi sacrifices his love for his best friend. Composed by Vandemataram Srinivas, ‘Dost Mera Dost’ has gained a cult following over the years for its lyrics, tune and choreography, and it truly showcases the cherishing bond between two childhood friends who come from different backgrounds. The film is loosely inspired by the Charlie Chaplin starrer City Lights.


‘Konthakalam Kindata’ from Nee Sneham is one of the most popular songs on friendship in Telugu cinema. Sung by RP Patnaik and Rajesh, the foot-tapping number showcases a pair of BFFs celebrating their bond on the streets of Kolkata. Directed by Parachuri Murali and bankrolled by MS Raju, Nee Sneham showcased how good an actor Uday Kiran was. His natural histrionics and emotional performance in the romantic-drama won appreciations from all quarters. Starring Aarti Agarwal as the leading lady, the film dealt with love, friendship and sacrifice.


This evergreen song from Chiranjeevi’s 1999 film Sneham Kosam has garnered a cult following over the years due to its heart touching lyrics by Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry, soothing tune by SA Rajkumar and the terrific performances of Chiranjeevi and Vijayakumar as friends for life.
