KOLKATA: Borja Gomez's son is recuperating in intensive care unit after undergoing brain surgery, East Bengal's Spanish defender has informed the club.
The six-year-old Mauro was recently detected with a serious ailment, forcing Borja to return home.
The club on Tuesday issued a statement, quoting the defender as saying: ""He is stable, in intensive care. He will be in hospital for a minimum of 10 days.
We have won the first battle. To fight on."
The club further stated: "The fight will be still on and we as a family need to keep him on our everyday prayer."
Meanwhile, with the red and golds reinforcing the squad in the January transfer window, young Edmund Lalrindika joined Alejandro Menendez's stable on loan from Bengaluru FC until May this year. He is the second player to be loaned this month after Avash Thapa joined them from Hyderabad FC. Jamshedpur FC striker CK Vineeth is also understood to be on East Bengal's radar.
Edmund, a versatile attacker from Mizoram, was a member of Bengaluru FC's ISL-winning squad in 2018-2019. A product of the AIFF Elite Academy, he also scored the equalizer for Bengaluru FC in a pre-season practice match against East Bengal in November.

Meanwhile, East Bengal club officials held a meeting with Quess chairman Ajit Isaac in Bengaluru on Tuesday. Isaac and other officials from the Bengaluru-based company, which controls the East Bengal football team, is likely to visit Kolkata after Sunday's I-League derby against Mohun Bagan for a meeting with coach Alejandro.
The club and the investor of its football team, however, remained tight-lipped over a possible separation.
