Kane Williamson played a captain's knock to help his side take a 51-run lead over India before umpires brought an end to the day two action of the first Test match at Basin Reserve in Wellington on Saturday (February 22).

When play resumed earlier in the day, Team India got off to yet another horrid start and managed to add just 43 runs before losing all 5 remaining wickets against a steaming Kiwi pace attack.

Overnight batsmen Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant were involved in a horrible mix-up in the 59th over in their attempts to take a quick single as India's wicketkeeper-batman was dismissed for 19 runs.

The collapse of wickets kept going after that as pacer Tim Southee rocked Ravichandran Ashwin's stumps on the very next delivery and dismissed him for a golden duck.

Rahane also departed soon after, edging an easy catch to BJ Watling behind the stumps.

Debutant Kyle Jamieson and Southee picked up the remaining two wickets of Ishant Sharma (5) and Mohammed Shami (21) for the BlackCaps as the visitors were bundled all-out for 165 runs, the 2nd lowest 1st innings totals for India under Virat Kohli's captaincy.

Pacer Ishant Sharma provided the away side with two early wickets of  Latham (11) and Blundell (30), reducing New Zealand to 73/2.

Skipper Kane Williamson came in next and formed a formidable partnership with Ross Taylor (44), who is playing his 100th Test match.

However, it was Ishant again who came up with another key breakthrough for India when his back of the length delivery caught Taylor by surprise and he ended up giving away an easy catch to Chateshwar Pujara.

Williamson brought up his 95-ball half-century but Mohammed Shami soon sent him back to the dressing room as the Kiwis lost their 4th wicket on 185.

Henry Nicholls' stay at the crease was cut-short by Ashwin after Virat Kohli took an excellent sharp catch to dismiss him. Henry made 17 runs off 62 balls.

Jasprit Bumrah had yet another poor outing as he went wicketless again and was the only Indian bowler who failed to get a dismissal on day two.
