India head coach Ravi Shastri has revealed the reason why the team management decided to go with Rishabh Pant over Wriddhiman Saha in the Wellington Test.

Shastri, on the eve of India's second Test match against New Zealand, claimed that the sole purpose to pick Pant in the playing 11 was to counter the Kiwi pace attack.

"We went for (Wriddhiman) Saha in India because there would be a lot of spin, and on turning tracks where bounce could be uneven, you need an experienced keeper and Saha is, to be honest, one of the best around," Ravi was quoted as saying by PTI.

"But when you come here, there is not much of spin bowling. Emphasis is on fast bowling and then the batting becomes a key factor."

"Plus the fact that he (Pant) is a left-hander, and an aggressive batsman lower down the order. That tilted the scales in his favour here," he added.

Ravi then went on to add how losing the first Test in that fashion will help in opening the mindset of his players.\

"The conditions in red-call cricket and white-ball cricket is completely different. Especially in New Zealand and England, any team can take a while to acclimatise. We were outplayed in the first Test. I always believe when you are in a good run, a shake-up like that can be good because it opens your mindset," Shastri said.

"When you are on the road winning all the time, you can have a closed mindset. Here, once you have seen what has happened, there is something to learn. It is a good lesson and I am sure boys are up for tomorrow," he added.

As for the match, the Blackcaps defeated India by 10 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series.

The two teams will play the 2nd Test at Hagley Oval in Christchurch starting Saturday.
