A massive mishap was averted at the Sawai Man Singh Hospital, the largest government hospital in the state when a fire broke out in the hospital during wee hours of Wednesday.

It took three fire tenders around one hour to douse the fire which broke out in a storeroom near operation theater and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). No harm to life was reported but there was a chaos-like situation for 3-4 hours at the hospital. The hospital management has set up a probe committee in the matter.

“The fire broke out at CT operation theater in Bangar Hospital compound situated in SMS Hospital premises at around 5 o’clock in the morning,” Dr SS Yadav, spokesperson at Sawai Man Singh Hospital said. “Immediately after the information of fire, hospital management called the fire brigade and as preventive measures, the patients at 12 bedded intensive care unit near the OT were immediately shifted to semi ICU,” he added.

The fire brigade station at Bani Park received the information of fire in the hospital at 5:15 am. After an hour-long toil, three fire tenders doused the fire. The patients, shifted to semi Intensive Care Unit were shifted back to the ICU after around 3 hours. On the information of fire, medical superintendent Dr DS Meena also rushed to the hospital.

“The patients were immediately shifted so that they do not face any problem due to the fire. Equipment, OT table and some furniture have suffered damaged due to fire. Primarily, it seems that the fire broke out due to short circuit. We have formed a four-member committee to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the damage,” said Dr Meena. Notably, in May, a cath lab in the hospital caught fire.
