Mumbai: Justice Satyaranjan Dharmadhikari, the second senior-most judge of the Bombay High Court, has abruptly tendered his resignation saying he did not want to be transferred for 'personal and family' reasons. Justice Dharmadhikari told reporters in Mumbai on Friday that he quit as he had been elevated as the Chief Justice of another high court although he did not want to leave Mumbai. Bombay HC’s current chief justice, Pradeep Nandrajog, is set to retire in a few days.

Justice Dharmadhikari has heard pleas of the family members of murdered CPI leader Govind Pansare and rationalist Narendra Dabholkar for a court-monitored probe. Last March, the bench he led said the state has been reduced to a laughing stock” for not properly probing the Pansare’s killing. "I did not want to leave Mumbai and they were not ready to elevate me as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court," the judge said on Friday.

"I have some personal responsibilities here in Mumbai, which is why I did not want to be transferred out of Maharashtra," the judge said. The Dharmadhikari family was associated with Mahatma Gandhi, the Sarvodaya and Satyagraha movements and is known for its legal and judiciary services.
