MADURAI: The Students' Federation of India (
SFI) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (
DYFI) on Monday held a protest near Tamukkam bus stand in
Madurai demanding reservation for
OBCs in
higher education. They also opposed the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
“Despite a direction from the Madras high court, the Centre is yet to act on implementing the 50% reservation for OBCs in PG medical seats under All India Quota.
We demand proper implementation of reservation for OBCs in medical seats and similarly in higher education without delay. OBCs should not be denied their rights any longer,” said S Vel Deva, district secretary, SFI.
The protesters added that NEP 2020 is discriminatory and appears more focused on promoting Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) principles and Brahmanical Hinduism.
“NEP 2020 also promotes centralisation, depriving states of power. Due to NEET many from Tamil Nadu are losing out on opportunities. Further centralisation of common exams for higher education would deepen the disparity,” added Vel Deva.
Members of SFI-DYFI have been actively raising their voice against the discriminatory policies in the NEP 2020 and Monday’s protest was a state-wide protest, including the one held in Madurai.
