Mumbai: Six Shiv Sena party workers, arrested in connection with the assault on retired navyman Madan Sharma, were released on bail on Saturday. Two of the accused--Kamlesh Kadam and Sanjay Manjre-- were Sena shakha pramukhs. Others arrested were Rakesh Belnekar, Pratap Sund Vera, Sunil Desai and Rakesh Mulik.
Sharma, 65, had received a forwarded image on WhatsApp--- a cartoon featuring chief minister Uddhav Thackeray-- that he in turn forwarded on a group comprising his society members on Wednesday.
Two days later, on Friday, he got phone calls inquiring about where he lived and details of his post. Around noon on Friday, he was summoned at his building entrance where a group of 8 to 10 men were waiting. As they started to assault him, Sharma ran back into the building. But some of the men followed him and dragged him out. This incident was captured on CCTVs.

Following Sharma's complaint, Samta Nagar police arrested six men between Friday and Saturday. After their release on bail, a BJP delegation protested before additional commissioner Dilip Sawant's office at Kandivali, demanding non bailable sections be applied against the attackers. Joint commissioner, law and order, Vishwas Nangre Patil told mediapersons they would seek legal advice on whether the non bailable section of trespass could be applied in the case.
