Mangaluru, Apr 6: The stranded homeless and migrant workers who have been shifted to a hostel near Nanthoor are breathing a sigh of relief after Bank of Baroda took up the initiative to provide them with good food.

Last week, the migrant workers complained about being served rotten food by Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). As many as 320 impoverished people staying at the hostel alleged that they are being served stale and undercooked food.

Following the matter, Daijiworld published a report on the miserable situation of the workers on April 2. Soon after, MCC commissioner Ajith Kumar, MLC Ivan D'Souza, and MLA U T Khader visited the hostel to assess the situation. Taking cognisance of the workers' condition, the lawmakers made necessary arrangements for them.

Now, Bank of Baroda has come forward to provide good food to the poverty-stricken workers. The staple food being given is rice and sambar.

To monitor their health regularly, medical staff of Wenlock Hospital visits the hostel and administers proper treatment to the workers.

One of the residents at the hostel, a migrant coolie worker identified as Manjunath said, "Earlier, we were being served stale and undercooked food, but since three days we are receiving delicious food that is being prepared in our hostel kitchen. Now the question is, once the lockdown ends where do we go and what do we do? If we get a job for three days, we can earn and travel to our destinations. This is for some of us who are from North Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and other parts of the country."

Congratulations Daijiworld for your outstanding journalism. Because of kind hearted and generous private establishments, people and philanthropists the poor and downtrodden are surviving in this country. Govt only promises unlimited without any benefit to the needy. MCC could have atleast arranged simple and healthy meals from hotels to serve these migrant workers as enough emergency aid package has been distributed to every state as per govt statement. So what is stopping MCC to spend that money instead of cutting corners and pocket or do they really have money as per promised statement???...
