Baghjan gas well inferno: Blowout preventer placed over the well

Guwahati: After months of work, people engaged in the fighting inferno in the gas well site in Baghjan in Tinsukia managed to place blowout preventer (BOP) over the well.
OIL India Limited stated, “The BOP Stack was successfully placed over the Well Head. While BOP stack alignment job was underway to insert the studs, one of the two bull lines connected with the Athey Wagon which was lifting the BOP stack came out from the socket due to impact of excessive heat. From the safety point of view and stability required for alignment of the BOP stack on the well head, experts decided to safely remove the BOP stack from the Well head. Operations will resume after carrying out necessary rectification jobs”.

The gas producing well blew out on May 27. It exploded into a massive inferno on June 9. Oil stated that total number of families surveyed for assessment of damage for compensation in Doomdooma and Tinsukia Circle stood at 2739.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study on various parameters are being carried out by various agencies, viz. M/s TERI, M/s ERM, M/s CSIR-NEIST, IIT-Guwahati apart from OIL’s in-house monitoring of Air quality/Noise level/Gas presence. Bio remediation activities at affected areas are also in progress.
