    India seems to be getting closer to an antidote, even as the coronavirus situation worsens

    This week India overtook the US in daily addition of new COVID-19 cases. It is worrying. The World Health Organization says that the infection is now spreading in rural areas and among the young. However, there is hope.

    Zydus Cadila vaccine demonstrates safety
    Ahmedabad based Zydus Cadila announced this week that its plasmid DNA vaccine ZyCoV-D was found to be safe and well tolerated in Phase I clinical trial. The company started Phase II clinical trials this week, to test the effi cacy of the vaccine. Zydus said that Phase II study will be conducted in over 1,000 healthy adult volunteers as part of the Adaptive Phase I/II dose escalation, multicentric, randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled study. The trial will be evaluating antibody and cellular immune response to the vaccine candidate in line with the current global clinical trial protocols.

    Biological E to start phase I trials in September
    Hyderabad based Biological E will start the Phase I human trials of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate in September. Mahima Datla, CEO of Biological E, said the company is working on the receptor binding domain (RBD) platform which it used before to manufacture Hepatitis B vaccines. Ms Datla said the company has a manufacturing capacity to produce 80-100 million doses per month on this platform.
