India's auto and pharma sectors not ready to wean off China

    • Days after a border clash with China this month in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed, New Delhi told firms to find ways to cut imports from China. But two big industries, automobiles and pharmaceuticals, say this is easier said than done.
    • Like many countries, India relies on China for products such as electronic components and drug ingredients because it cannot make them or source them elsewhere as cheaply, company and industry figures say.
    • Thus any moves to curb imports or make them costlier without developing alternatives will hurt local businesses.
    • "We don't import because we like to, but because we have no choice," said R.C. Bhargava, chairman of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd , the country's biggest carmaker.

Strained India-China relations may increase supply chain risks

    • Any potential escalation between India and China could increase operational and supply-chain risks in the current economic backdrop, even as economies look to recover from the pandemic, brokerages have said citing the recent border tension between the two countries.
    • The most affected sectors could be Auto, Consumer Durables, Pharmaceuticals, Telecom, Chemicals and Renewable Power sector (Solar) that seem to be the most dependent in terms of sourcing from China.
    • According to an India strategy report by Motilal Oswal Institutional Equities, it would be difficult and expensive for Indian firms in certain sectors to immediately find alternative suppliers at the same scale or costs.
    • This could create big problems for such companies who would not only have to look quickly at alternate source of supplies but also be ready to add up costs at a time when the Covid-19 has severely dented overall economic conditions and squeezed demand in several sectors.
    • While Consumer Durables are dependent on China for components, Pharma is dependent for API sourcing.
    • Telecom is dependent on China from a network standpoint as well as for 4G smartphone handsets as China caters to more than 75 percent of the Indian handset demand.
    • Various sectors have material inter-linkages with China and form a critical part of the supply-chain for many firms in India, the report said.

Why hasn't India benefited from your 'strange bonhomie' with China: Congress asks PM

    • The Congress on Thursday asked PM Modi why has not India gained anything from the "strange bonhomie" which it claimed he shared with China.
    • Seeking to turn the tables on the ruling party, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said the BJP also shared bonhomie with the Communist Party of China (CPC) with several party-level exchanges taking place in the past.
    • He sought to know whether India's borders have become safe after these exchanges in the last many years.
    • "There is a strange kind of bonhomie between Narendra Modi and China, a two decade old bonhomie. Why doesn't the country get the benefit of that bonhomie," he asked at a virtual press conference.
    • "We do want to ask you, if as president of the party, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari and Amit Shah have been sending delegations, strengthening the bonds between the Communist Party of China and the BJP. What has the country gained out of these bonds? Why are the borders insecure despite these bonds that you have," he also asked.
    • Khera also asked what role did the India Foundation, an organisation run by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval's son has in strengthening the bonds with China.
    • "Why does India Foundation keep visiting these countries? Who do they meet? What's the outcome? What's the role of NSA Ajit Doval's son- Shaurya Doval? He keeps attending these meetings through India Foundation? These are important questions in the light of what is happening," he asked.

China tries to pacify families of 'unsung' PLA soldiers killed in Ladakh, reports IANS

    • China on Wednesday attempted to pacify the aggrieved families of the Chinese soldiers who were killed in clashes with Indian troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh's Galwan valley, without any official recognition from Beijing.
    • The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime's mouthpiece, The Global Times, written by its editor Hu Xijn claimed that "the dead have been treated with the highest respect in the military, and that the information will eventually be reported to society at the right time, so that heroes can be honored and remembered as they deserve."
    • The editorial came two days after a video emerged from China showing that the families of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) personnel were outraged by the fact that unlike Indian soldiers, their martyrs had received no honor and no acknowledgment.
    • The video went viral on social media.
    • Though the Global Times has admitted that "less than 20" PLA soldiers were killed in the violent face-off in Ladakh, the Xi Jinping government has remained tight-lipped about them.

Why clash with China may not impact Russian arms supplies to India

    • Any concern that the current India-China clash in Ladakh and its potential for escalation may affect Russian arms supplies to India is misplaced.
    • India-Russia defence ties are time-tested, with both countries equally interested in nurturing them as a vital pillar of the overall relationship.
    • Russia, unlike others, has never imposed arms sanctions on India.

    • The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) on Thursday said it is against a blanket ban on Chinese imports terming it infeasible as India imports many strategic items from its neighbour, and expressed fear of retaliatory action by China if goods of Chinese origin face additional inspection at Indian ports.
    • The association said that knee-jerk reactions will not help and the country can reduce the dependence on Chinese imports by developing an ecosystem for manufacturing.
    • While there has been no official instruction on 100% checking of consignments coming from China, Chennai and some other ports began closer scrutiny of Chinese imports a few days ago.

Congress seeks virtual Parliament session to discuss China issue

    • The Congress has demanded a virtual session of Parliament to discuss the Indo-China face-off and other issues pertaining to national importance, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the fuel price hike.
    • Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said, "There should be virtual session to discuss important issues. During the 1962 war, BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee demanded a session and the then Prime Minister accepted that demand." He said even the parliamentary committees should meet to discuss and raised questions as to why they were stalled.
    • The Congress said that Vajpayee even led a protest on the issue in 1962. "It is unfortunate that the presiding officers of both the Houses should have walked the extra mile in order to prevail upon the government, not should try and subvert Parliament in this manner and escape parliamentary oversight," said Manish Tewari while demanding for the session.
    • Former Union Minister Manish Tewari said, "It is extremely unfortunate and we say it with great regret that while you can have Russia, India, China trilateral summits virtually, while the G-20 can be held virtually and all party meeting on China can be held virtually, this Government has walked the extra mile in order to hide behind rules, in order to escape parliamentary oversight.

Satellite images show new Chinese structures near site of border clash with India, reports Reuters

    • China appears to have added new structures near the site of a deadly border clash with India in the western Himalayas, fresh satellite pictures show, heightening concerns about further flare-ups between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
    • Indian and Chinese military commanders agreed on Monday to step back from a weeks-old standoff at several locations along their disputed border following the June 15 clash in the Galwan Valley in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed.
    • The satellite images showing new construction activity in the week following the brutal hand-to-hand combat underline the challenge of disengagement and the risk the accord could still fall apart because of overlapping claims in the arid territory.
    • The pictures shot on Monday by U.S.-based space technology firm Maxar Technologies show what appear to be extensive Chinese structures on a raised river terrace overlooking the Galwan River.
    • India says the area where the structures have sprung up are on its side of the poorly defined, undemarcated Line of Actual Control or the de facto border between the two Asian giants.
    • China says the whole of Galwan valley, located at about 14,000ft (4,300m), is its territory and blames Indian troops for triggering the clashes.

China is hell-bent upon altering status quo at border: Adhir Rajan Chowdhury

    • Amid talks between India-China to ease border tensions, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Thursday said despite New Delhi's effort to "diffuse the tense situation" along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), Beijing is "hell-bent on altering the status quo" at the border.
    • "In spite of all our endeavours to diffuse the tense situation along LOAC which even resulted in 20 precious lives of our army, China is hell-bent upon altering the status quo," Chowdhury tweeted.
    • The Congress leader said that China is "fervently encroaching" India's land at the cost of the country's security and territorial integrity.
    • "China is furtively and fervently encroaching our land in a steady manner much to the peril of Indian security and territorial integrity, it is a catch-22 situation for us, but we can not afford ourselves to be cowed down by the red army," he added.
    • He further said that India must tackle Chinese aggression using all necessary means.

Contrary to Modi's statement, Ladakh status quo changed: Chidambaram

    • Former Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram on Thursday once again slammed the BJP-led Central government over the India-China Line of Actual Control (LAC) issue, saying contrary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement it is "undeniable" that the status quo in Ladakh's Galwan valley has been changed by China in April this year.
    • In a series of tweets, Chidambaram said, "Foreign Ministry and PLA (People's Liberation Army) of China once again assert their claim to the entire Galwan Valley and demand that India should vacate the valley. Extraordinary demand."
    • "Will BJP-led NDA government once again reassert India's claim and demand that status quo ante must be restored?" he questioned.
    • "Contrary to what the Prime Minister said, it is undeniable that the status quo was changed by Chinese troops in April-June 2020. People are watching if the Modi government will succeed in restoring the status quo ante," the Congress leader said.
    • Chidambaram was referring to Modi's statement made on Friday during the all party meeting that "China did not occupy the Indian land".

    The bilateral agreements and protocols

    • The bilateral agreements and protocols to maintain peace at LAC include Sino-Indian boundary agreements of 1993 and 1996. The 1993 agreement states in case personnel from either side cross the LAC, “upon being cautioned by the other side, they shall immediately pull back to their side of the Line of Actual Control”. China has not done that either in Galwan or Pangong Tso. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) rather built structures and stationed its troops which can be considered troop build up.

    • Both sides had vacated the site after the deadly clash in which 20 Indian soldiers led by Col Santosh Babu were killed. The Chinese tent was removed during the skirmish, following which the two sides agreed on talks through senior military and diplomatic channels. The construction of a new tent even as talks make slow progress is bound to have a debilitating impact on efforts to disengage the troops, added sources.
