GUWAHATI: The Assam government has registered a case against Sharjeel Imam, one of the key organisers of the Shaheen Bagh protests in New Delhi, for saying the main goal of the protest was to cut off the Northeast states from the rest of the country.
Assam's Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) GP Singh tweeted, “An FIR has been lodged against Sharjil Imam for his speech and inter alia commission of offence u/s 13 (1)/18 of the UA(P)ACT read with section 153 A, 153 B and 124 A IPC at Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station.”

State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “This is a very sadist statement and may result in a law and order situation. We have registered a case against him and will pursue the case till he is punished."

The anti-CAA protests at Shaheen Bagh and other places were being done by certain members of a certain community to destroy India and create another Pakistan, he reiterated. The minister assured a peace accord was likely to be inked in Assam’s Bodoland. However, there would be no division of the state. “Territorial integrity of Assam will be protected.”

Recently banned NDFB, an insurgent group active in Assam, has signed an agreement with the government for suspension of operations. According to the pact, the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) under the leadership of its 'president' B Saoraigwra will abjure violence and join in peace talks with the government.

Chairman of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (R) Ranjan Daimary, who was serving life imprisonment in the 2008 serial bomb blasts case was given a interim bail and was released from the Central Jail in Guwahati on Saturday following he had gone to New Delhi to discuss with Government on the proposed Bodo accord.
