BENGALURU: Aditya Rao, the Udupi resident who was arrested for planting an explosive in Mangaluru airport this Monday, changed 19 jobs in 14 years. Rao wore several hats with equal felicity: sales executive, software engineer, production engineer, cook, bartender, hotel cashier and a security guard. He also spent a year in prison for making hoax bomb calls to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), Bengaluru, in 2018. Rao's longest stint (18 months) was with a private firm in Bengaluru.

According to Rao’s confession statement in the KIA case accessed by TOI, Rao finished his primary schooling in Mumbai and went to high school in Kodagu in 1998. He graduated as a mechanical engineer in 2004 and finished MBA in 2006 from Mysuru. He started working as a sales executive with a multinational bank the same year.

After 13 months in his first job, Rao joined as a sales manager with another multinational bank in 2007 and later joined another bank.

Police said Rao used to draw a handsome salary. Barely five months into his third job, Rao felt ‘bored’ and switched to small-scale industries. In 2008, Rao joined a Peenya industry as a design and software engineer. After about 18 months, he resigned and returned to Udupi. “I was tired of sitting in AC rooms. There was no thrill in the job,” Rao told police.

Between September 2011 and February 2012 Rao lived with his parents, during which he worked in three different hotels as a cashier. In March 20-12, Rao joined a college in Ujire as a security guard. He worked as a guard in three more colleges between 2013 and 2016. In 2016, he joined a mutt in Udupi as a cook and lived there till July 2017.

He also worked at several bar and restaurants before applying for the job of a security guard at KIA in 2018. Rao’s application was rejected, following which he made four hoax bomb calls to the airport. After serving one-year jail term, he worked in two hotels before planting an explosive in Mangaluru airport.
