    Synopsis

Meanwhile, data on the final NRC list was made offline from its official website as IT major Wipro, which was entrusted with this job, terminated its services over non-payment of dues. However, the Union home ministry clarified that NRC data in Assam is safe although some technical issues were visible and assured that it would be resolved soon.

Guwahati: The failure on the part of a project manager, associated with the National Register of Citizens (NRC), in handing over official passwords related to the project before she resigned, has created quite a flutter as NRC officials suspect that some crucial emails and vital correspondence may have been deleted.

Police have registered a case against the project manager Ajupi Baruah following a complaint by the NRC directorate. A senior NRC official, who does not want to be identified, told ET, “The NRC directorate has lodged a complaint and a case is registered. Investigation has started. We fear that some vital emails and correspondence might have been deleted. The officer has resigned soon after former NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela left.”

Following Supreme Court’s directive, Prateek Hajela was transferred on deputation to Madhya Pradesh and Hitesh Dev Sarma was appointed as NRC coordinator.

Deputy secretary, home, political and executive director of NRC, Chandana Mahanta, in a complaint to the officer in charge of Paltan Bazaar police station in Guwahati stated, “I inform you that Ajupi Baruah, resident of Guwahati worked as project manager, NRC, resigned and handed over the charge on 11th November 2019, but did not share the password of the official email ids CPM.NRC@gmail.com and pm.spmunrc@gov.in”

“As you know that the NRC updation project is very sensitive in nature and is being done under the direct supervision of Supreme Court of India, the emails mentioned above contain very sensitive correspondence/information of NRC. Unauthorised possession of the password by her is violation of Section 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, as it related to national security and integrity,” Mahanta has stated in his complaint.

    DATA GOES OFFLINE

Meanwhile, data on the final NRC list was made offline from its official website as IT major Wipro, which was entrusted with this job, terminated its services over non-payment of dues. However, the Union home ministry clarified that NRC data in Assam is safe although some technical issues were visible and assured that it would be resolved soon. NRC authorities have cited non-availability of cloud service since December 15 as the reason for the disappearance of the NRC data. NRC authorities have assured that the same will be restored shortly.
