NEW DELHI: Several Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members belonging to regional parties on Thursday staged a protest over pending GST dues near the Mahatma Gandhi statue inside the Parliament complex.

Members from parties such as Trinamool, TRS, DMK, SP, AAP, RJD, NCP and Shiv Sena participated in the protest. The Centre had recently given two options to states regarding the payment of GST dues. However, the states are unhappy with the offer. Six non-BJP states have already rejected the proposal.

“When GST was introduced it was promised to states that there will be a 14% increase year-on-year in the compensation given by the central government. It was also said that if there is any deficiency it will be paid by the central government,” DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran told ET. “Now, there is a huge deficiency in GST collection due to the lockdown. But the central government is not honouring the commitment.”

Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said the Centre is being unfair, especially to non-BJP ruled states. “The central government should give the dues of Rs 9,000 crore to Telangana,” said TRS MP Keshava Rao. AAP MP Sanjay Singh was banging steel plates. SP leader Akhilesh Yadav also joined in. “It is a conspiracy of the BJP government to trouble the non-BJP ruled state governments,” Yadav told the media.
