    Tamil Nadu reports third consecutive day of Covid-19 cases under 4,000 mark

    This is the third consecutive day that the State has reported a drop from the highs of last week. On Monday, 3,827 cases were reported while on Tuesday that number touched 3616. Last week, the state saw over 4,000 positive cases almost every day.

    CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu reported another day of Covid-19 cases being below the 4,000 mark with 3,756 people testing positive for the infection on Wednesday. However, 64 people succumbed to the infection taking the death toll to 1,700, the state media bulletin confirmed.

    This is the third consecutive day that the State has reported a drop from the highs of last week. On Monday, 3,827 cases were reported while on Tuesday that number touched 3616. Last week, the state saw over 4,000 positive cases almost every day.

    According to the state media bulletin, the total number of cases in the state now stands at 1,22,350.

    Tamil Nadu lifted the complete lockdown in Chennai and neighbouring districts from Monday and eased relaxations across the state.

    Chennai has 72,500 cases in all, of which 1,261 were reported on Wednesday. The state capital has 21,766 active cases and had been under an intense lockdown from June 19 till July 5 along with neighbouring Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram.

    Madurai, which is currently the only district in the State that is continuing with a complete lockdown, recorded 379 cases on Wednesday.

    The bulletin said 3,051 people were discharged on Wednesday and that total recoveries in the state stood at 74,167.

    Testing has been a major focus of the government and the bulletin said 34,962 persons were tested on Wednesday.

    There are 98 testing facilities, of which 52 are government-run while 46 are private.

    Further, the bulletin added that of the 3,29,388 passengers who have entered the State through various means be it by air, rail, sea or road, a total of 4,030 people have tested positive till July 7.

    A general state-wide lockdown is in place till July 31, but the state government announced a slew of relaxations on Saturday.
