AGRA: The ex-student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) who was arrested on Sunday for shouting slogans against the VC along with some other students at the official Republic Day function, was released on bail on Monday.
Ahmad Mujtaba Faraz was granted bail after two AMU faculty members — prof Mohammad Mohibul Haque and prof Imrana Naseem — stood surety for him.
Earlier on Sunday night, students who were protesting for Faraz’s release at Chungi gate ended their dharna after being assured of support by faculty members.
On Sunday, four students were detained by police after the university’s proctor team handed them over to cops for raising slogans against the vice-chancellor, when he began addressing the gathering at the official Republic Day function on campus. The students were identified as Tahir Azmi and Siddhartha Gulati from the engineering department, BA student Rafiuddin and ex-student Ahmad Mujtaba Faraz.
Later in the evening, police released the current students, while Faraz was sent to judicial remand under Section 151 of CrPc, for creating disturbance. The students had shouted “Go back” as the VC began his Republic Day speech, to protest against his not protecting students and allowing police inside campus on December 15, which left several students injured. AMU students have been demanding the VC’s resignation ever since.
The students detained on Sunday alleged that the proctor team had manhandled them, and that some anti-socials had also attacked them. They claimed that instead of protecting varsity students, the proctor team took handed them over to police.
When the news spread on campus, scores of students, including women, gathered outside the proctor’s office and shouted slogans, “Yeh jo dehshatgardi hai, uske peeche vardi hai (police terror is behind the fear among students)”.
