AGRA: Despite repeated complaints to the civic body administration, residents of over 27 municipal wards in the city are yet to get Ganga water supply due to the absence of necessary infrastructure.
According to locals, the requisite infrastructure to supply Ganga water has not been provided despite making several rounds to the Agra municipal corporation. Paschimpuri resident Suresh Kumar said, “We have made several requests to the civic body administration seeking Ganga water supply.
However, no action has been taken yet.” Shamshabad Road resident Vimal Mohan said, “The supply of Ganga water in the city was started around a year ago. However, a large part of the city is still not connected to the pipelines. The required infrastructure should be developed in a time-bound manner.”
Under the Gangajal project, Agra receives water supply from Palra headworks in Bulandshahr’s upper Ganga canal. Around 130 km of pipeline has been laid for the purpose. At present, Sikandra and Jeevan Mandi waterworks stations receive 140 cusecs of Ganga water on a daily basis.
According to data available with the civic body, only 18 municipal wards in the city have complete infrastructure for Ganga water supply. Mayor Naveen Jain said, “We receive a number of complaints from various parts of the city over Ganga water supply. We have directed officials to ensure that pipelines are laid and required infrastructure set up to provide adequate water supply to each and every household.”
Talking to TOI, Jal Sansthan officials said that a proposal has been sent to the state government for laying water supply pipelines in the said wards.
Meanwhile, residents claimed that leakage on water supply pipelines maintained by Jal Sansthan cause much wastage on a daily basis. Estimates suggest that at least 50 million litres daily (MLD) water is wasted in the city due to pipeline leakage.
