AGRA: In an apparent bid to calm down agitated students, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) proctor, Afifullah Khan, on Tuesday, resigned from his post without specifying any reasons for his decision.

After the violence on the night of Dec 15, students of various faculties had been on a agitation demanding the resignation of top university officials, including the proctor, for the alleged police excesses in the campus.
Talking to media, AMU coordination committee member, Faizul Hassan, who is also the former students’ union president, said that though this move is ”welcome” but the students will continue their agitation till their other demands including resignation of the VC and the registrar are met.
Varsity spokesperson Rahat Abrar, said, “the university is back to normal to some extent and efforts were on to resolve other pending issues including quashing of the FIRs lodged against bonafide students of the varsity”.
He said, barring few departments, classes were held in the university today and examinations will be rescheduled soon.
According to administrative officials, Proctor’s resignation has helped build up confidence among students and the administration is hopeful that the situation will normalise by next week.
