AGRA: The Uttar Pradesh police on late Thursday night slapped the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against Gorakhpur paediatrician Dr Kafeel Khan, hours before he was expected to walk free from the Mathura jail, four days after he was granted bail by Aligarh’s chief judicial magistrate.
Confirming this, Aligarh district magistrate CB Singh, said, "Protests had continued in the city and AMU for days after Khan delivered an inflammatory speech in the university campus.
In fact, students turned violent in the campus on December 15."
DIG (Aligarh) Akash Kulahary told TOI that the NSA allows preventive detention for months if the authorities feel that the person is a threat to National security and law and order.
Dr Khan was booked by Aligarh police on December 13 for delivering a provocative speech in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) during an anti-CAA protest in the campus a day earlier and was arrested from Mumbai airport on January 29 by UP special task force. He was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days on January 30.
Dr Khan had been lodged in Mathura jail despite bail granted being to him by Aligarh chief judicial magistrate court on February 10.
Khan’s younger brother, Kashif Jameel, who visited Mathura jail on Friday with a hope to take his brother back home, told TOI that he was very disappointed with the government’s decision of slapping NSA against his brother.
"My brother has been unnecessary harassed by the government because of his surname "Khan". He said that many political leaders including those from BJP had given several provocative speeches but none of them were harassed like his brother. "They are trying to suppress his voice as he stands with others, demanding justice for victims," he said.

Jameel said that he had reached Mathura jail by 7pm on Thursday but he was told that the time of was over and his papers would checked on Friday. He said and email regarding Khan’s release order was sent to the jail by 5 pm. "We have been fulfilling all legal formalities but no one is here to listen us. We have only hope from judiciary now," he added.
Khan’s wife Dr Shabistan Khan also reached Mathura jail to meet her husband but she started feeling unwell after learning about NSA charges against him.
