GANDHINAGAR: Relaxations provided to industrial activity during the lockdown and subsequent unlock phases has had the desired impact on economic activity in the state. Power and water consumed by industries have touched the 2019 optimum level, indicating a return to near-normalcy of economic activity in Gujarat. Consumption of electricity and water by industries is expected to increase further.
Manoj Das, principal secretary to the chief minister and in-charge principal secretary, industries and mines department said, “Key indicators like industrial power consumption and water demand are showing complete normalcy now.
In fact, we are expecting that in July, these indicators will exceed the levels recorded in July 2019.”

On June 28, the power consumption by industries almost reached the 100% demand at the same time last year, while water consumption in Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) areas crossed the demand level of the same time last year.
According to government figures, the total power consumption by industries in Gujarat stood at 206 million units (MU) on June 28, 2019. The corresponding figure this year was 204MU, marginally short of the demand last year. Likewise, the water consumed by industries on June 28, 2019 stood at 248 million litres per day (MLD), while the corresponding figure for June 28, 2020 was 349MLD.
Das added that another indicator of economic activity showing signs of revival is the fact that a large number of migrant workers, who had left the state during the lockdown, have begun to return. “In GIDC areas alone, 53,000 units are now fully functional and employ over 17.5 lakh workers. Moreover, we are focusing on providing relief to the micro small and medium enterprise (MSME) sector and other units. Under the PM’s programme, 125,000 MSME units have got loan approvals of over Rs 9,000 crore,” he said.
Das added that the state government and the government of India are attempting to provide all sops to industries and commercial activities while ensuring safety measures are adhered to.
