Secure check-in baggage scanning at Ahmedabad airport soon
Ahmedabad airport authorities claim the new system will be more secure
AHMEDABAD: In a major relief to passengers travelling by the international terminal at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad, they will now be able to directly approach for check-in, without getting their baggage screened manually.
Thanks to a new in-line baggage scanning (ILBS) system that is expected to be implemented from January, the process of manually scanning baggage through the X-ray machines at the Terminal-2 will be done away with.

Ahmedabad airport authorities claim the new system will be more secure. “The Terminal-2 of SVPI airport will soon have the infrastructure for ILBS. The new system is extremely secure as it uses a 3D technology for scanning the baggage and its contents unlike linear images of baggage that were captured earlier,” said Manoj Gangal, director, SVPI airport.
“The new system has been commissioned and is currently being tested and is expected to be implemented early in January,” Gangal added.
Earlier this year, a similar system was implemented at the domestic terminal as well. Well-placed sources confirmed that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) invested a total of Rs 10.3 crore for procuring, installing and commissioning this technology at Terminal-2.
“The new system will come as a relief for passengers and will save a lot of time they used to spend waiting in queues for the manual baggage scanning. This is particularly true for senior citizens, first time flyers and those travelling with kids,”Gangal further added.

“More secure as images of scanned baggage will be high-resolution 3D images that can be rotated and viewed from different angles. Recording facility enables preserving scanned baggage images for upto 30 days. At the same time, it will also have an automatic tag reader which will enable tracking of the baggage till it reaches the aircraft,” said a technical expert who is involved with the project.
Approximately 6,700 passengers move in and out of the international terminal at SVPI airport in a day. “Waiting in queues is cumbersome, especially when travelling with senior citizens or kids. It is a great inconvenience and time consuming too. I hope the new system makes a difference,” said Ahmedabad-based businessman, Dinesh Mehta.
Echoing a similar view, Harsh Tanna, another Ahmedabad-based entrepreneur, said, “The queues are never ending and it is a time taking and cumbersome process. It is indeed a brilliant initiative to add to passengers’ ease.”
