Vehicles from Surat being checked at Ahmedabad entry points

With cases of Covid 19 on the rise in Surat, passengers of vehicles coming from Surat to Ahmedabad are being checked by police and medical teams of AMC at points of entry to the city. The decision was taken at a meeting between city police and civic body officials on Wednesday.

AHMEDABAD: With cases of Covid 19 on the rise in Surat, passengers of vehicles coming from Surat to Ahmedabad are being checked by police and medical teams of AMC at points of entry to the city. The decision was taken at a meeting between city police and civic body officials on Wednesday.
Ahmedabad police commissioner Asish Bhatia said checkpoints have been set up at entry points of the city.
“Police, along with medical teams of the AMC started checking passengers of vehicles from Surat starting from Wednesday itself, so that the spread of Covid-19 can be minimized,” he said.
Surat has emerged as the new Covid-19 hotspot in the state as it has overtaken Ahmedabad in reporting the highest number of new cases in a single day, since June end.
According to official figures, 204 fresh Covid cases were reported in Surat on Tuesday taking the total to cumulative 6,098 cases, and on Wednesday another 215 new cases pushed up the cumulative Covid cases figure to 6,313.
Gujarat’s principal secretary, health, Jayanti Ravi, camped in the city and discussed in detail how the intensity of Covid-19 outbreak in Surat can be contained.
On June 19, while the diamond city reported 93 cases of Covid -19, Ahmedabad’s number of fresh infections on the day was 312. A week later, Surat’s daily figure jumped to 152 while that of Ahmedabad came down to 225 cases.
The increase in cases in Surat picked up pace from June
30. For the first time, Surat’s daily case figure overtook that of Ahmedabad.
