ALLAHABAD: Governor Anandiben Patel on Friday said girls who are raising their voice against dowry system should be honoured at universities.
Addressing the 14th convocation of the Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU) on Friday, the governor said, “Students, both boys and girls, who have bagged gold medals, should not seek gold from anyone.”
She asked students to resolve to work for the development of the country.

Presiding over the function, the governor, who is also the chancellor of the university, said all universities should adopt at least five villages and all degree colleges should take care of at least one village.
“Convocation is always a moment of pride for students as they complete a major milestone by obtaining knowledge. Universities should not only impart education to students but also lay the roadmap for a happy life in future,” she said, calling upon higher education institutions to make students competent to face challenges so that they could become better citizens and contribute to nation building.
She said education had an important role in eliminating social evils.

Chief guest on the occasion, Dr Ashok Bhagat, said education was a unique medium to empower a person. “We should work unitedly to save environment, forest, water and earth and connect with nature,” he said.
Special guest Dr Ashish Gautam was conferred honoris causa doctor of law (LLD) degree on this occasion.
Vice-chancellor Prof KN Singh delivered welcome address and presented the progress report of the university. He said students were the future of the country and would serve the society.
A total of 2,700 students were awarded degrees. This year too, girls outshone boys in bagging gold medals.
In all, 18 gold medals were given to students of various disciplines out of which 14 were awarded to girls.
On this occasion, the governor laid the foundation stone of community centre which would come up on the Yamuna campus of the university. She also released a book ‘Sarva Samaveshi Sanskriti Kumbh’.
