Governor Anandiben Patel launches five-day Ganga Yatra in Ballia on Monday
BIJNOR: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath flagged off ambitious 'Ganga Yatra' on Monday from Bijnor and sought to draw parallels between the Ganga and Yamuna, which he said continued to remain filthy as the Delhi government did nothing to clean it. Flanked by Union ministers VK Singh and Sanjeev Balyan, Adityanath performed elaborate puja before launching the yatra, which will pass through 27 districts of the state.
As part of the yatra, several state ministers, MPs and MLAs will camp in villages along the river bank and tell people about the Central and state governments' initiatives to clean the river. They will also encourage people to do organic fruit farming along the river bank, for which subsidy was also announced. Chief minister of neighbouring Uttarakhand Trivendra Singh Rawat was also expected to attend the function, but he could make it due to inclement weather.
The second leg of the 'Ganga Yatra' was launched from Ballia by governor Anandiben Patel. Both the yatras will culminate in Kanpur. Addressing rally after launching the yatra at Ganga Barrage, the CM said, "Had Delhi government discharged its duties properly, Yamuna would also have become as clean as Ganga." The remark comes on the heels of Delhi elections.
"Ganga is the symbol of faith, and is also linked with our economy. Not only it has the spiritual value, but it also revitalizes our economy. The prosperity of 40% population of India is directly linked to the Ganga," Yogi said.
"PM Narendra Modi had launched 'Namami Gange' scheme to make the river clean. The Centre and the state government have discharged their duties to attain the target," he added. The chief minister called for "Ram temple-like" resolve to ensure that the Ganga is clean.
