CHANDIGARH: PGI doctors have claimed that they have successfully operated upon a 110-year-old city resident, who is the oldest case in the country so far. The team comprised Prof Vijay G Goni, Dr Tanvir Samra, Dr Deepak, Dr Karan, Dr Pradeep and Dr Sumeet. The age of the patient has been confirmed from her Aadhar card. The woman, Manjauki, is a resident of Mauli Jagran.
The oldest person to undergo partial hip replacement in the world is a 112-year-old patient from the UK as per the Guinness Book of World Records.

The surgery was performed on January 8 and the patient has been discharged. “This elderly woman had a fall at home and sustained fracture in the right hip bone-,which made her bedridden. These fractures in such elderly patients are a challenge to manage as the patients are very fragile and have various age-related complications. Delay and failure to treat them can be life threatening from complications due to bedridden condition. The main goal of this surgery is to provide a painless mobile and stable hip joint and to mobilize them early,” said Prof Goni.
How did the doctors decide to take the case when usually the elderly implants are avoided? “We asked the relatives about the pre-injury status. The patient was able to walk before the fall and we thought to achieve the same status after the surgery,” said Dr Deepak. However, it was not easy to operate as due to the age, the patient was in a state of confusion. “She was in a state of delirium and was not willing to be admitted. The relatives said that the patient had never been admitted to a hospital earlier,” said Dr Deepak.
Though the elderly patient was operated upon, the doctors have a word of caution. “However, not all patients are considered safe for this surgery and not all patients from elderly age group should be restrained from surgery. These patients need an efficient back-up team, including anaesthetist and intensivist to handle them during anaesthesia and after surgery as they can deteriorate any time,” said Dr Deepak.
The patient was made to stand the very next day. “She is using a walker, which she will be using for a few days until she feels comfortable to walk,” said Dr Deepak.
