CHANDIGARH: After nearly 7.5 hours of "extremely complicated" surgery, a team of doctors at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh successfully "re-implanted" Punjab Police assistant sub-inspector Harjit Singh's left hand that was chopped off in a clash with
Nihang Sikhs in Patiala.
The ASI's hand was severed with a sharp weapon, suspected to be a sword.
Three other policemen and a mandi official also sustained injuries when the group of Nihangs attacked them after being asked to show curfew passes at a vegetable market in Patiala district on Sunday morning.
Punjab Police chief DGP Dinkar Gupta immediately informed the PGI director Dr Jagat Ram about the shocking incident. Harjit Singh was rushed from Sanaur in Patiala to PGI, a distance of over 70 km.
The PGI director quickly assembled the emergency team at the hospital's advanced trauma centre and the surgery to re-attach the 50-year-old ASI's hand started at 10am.
