CHENNAI: Crossing Jawaharlal Nehru Road near the Chennai Moffusil Bus Terminus has become a nightmarish experience for motorists, with delay in completing construction of a flyover at the spot the main reason for the traffic chaos.
Work on the 1.09-km-long grade separator on the stretch, which every day, on an average, has 1.5 lakh vehicles plying, was launched in 2015 at an estimated ₹93crore.
It was expected to be completed in 33 months but even after five years, there seems to be little progress.
Soon after construction began, buses coming into the city were not allowed to turn right at the traffic signal to enter the Chennai Moffusil Bus Terminus (CMBT) through the main entrance. They were forced to proceed further, take a U-turn near the State Election Commission office and merge with north-bound vehicles near the statue of late chief minister M Karunanidhi and turn left to enter the terminus. The busy stretch now has to accommodate buses which are diverted, resulting in confusion round the clock. There is very little space for other vehicles.
“We are forced to spend more than 40 minutes in crossing this stretch. It was bearable during the lockdown as the number of vehicles on the road was less. Now, with more number of vehicles on the road, vehicles are forced to proceed very slowly,” said Prabhu, a resident of Villivakkam who regularly uses the stretch.
“It is difficult especially during morning hours, when we are expected to reach office on time. There is no alternative road,” he said. Many motorists said that the officials concerned should speed up the construction process to avoid such confusion “We are trying to manage with the available road space. Since the width of the road is reduced now, it is proving to be difficult,” said a traffic police official.
